Detox Your Face with Bentonite Clay + Activated Charcoal

Over the past year, my beauty routine has simplified and I have discovered SO many natural ingredients and their skin benefits. Two of them being Bentonite Clay and Activated Charcoal.

I was introduced to these ingredients by The Holbox. I had never seen activated charcoal in my life, nor knew what the heck to do with it. The first thing I did was hop on line for a handy dandy google search to figure out what I could do or make with it.

They sent me a few sample of each and I made a mask with the Bentonite clay first. The brand that I used was by Redmond, and I just made a super simple 2-ingredient mask using the clay + apple cider vinegar. Which was amazing on its own.

What exactly is bentonite clay? Well according to Mountain Rose Herbs:

Bentonite, also referred to as Montmorillonite, is one of the most effective and powerful healing clays. Bentonite can be used externally as a clay poultice, mud pack or in the bath and, in skin care recipes. A good quality Bentonite should be a grey/cream color and anything bordering “pure white” is suspect. It has a very fine, velveteen feel and is odorless and non-staining. The type of bentonite offered by Mountain Rose herbs is a Sodium Bentonite.

Some skin benefits of bentonite clay:

Bentonite clay carries a strong negative charge which bonds to the positive charge in many toxins, making it great for clearing acne on the skin. You can make a paste by mixing water with bentonite clay to help treat any skin irritations like insect bites, wounds, blemishes, or burns. Leave it on until it dries then rinse it off.

I was having a really bad skin week and I wanted to do a super detox on my face and thought, why not mix clay + charcoal? That seems like it will be pretty powerful, and it was!

What exactly is "Activated Charcoal"?

Activated charcoal means the carbon is infused with oxygen and is prepared for human ingestion (in the case of poisoning or detox) and skincare products. So not the charcoal from off your grill, don't try it!

What are some skin benefits of Activated Charcoal:

It is used in acne products to draw out impurities, heal pimples, and prevent further breakouts. Activated charcoal actually binds to impurities and washes them away.

Here's the mask that I created using both of these naturally powerful ingredients!
